The number one reason I am finding that teachers may feel underappreciated, is because they are under paid. Although, teachers don’t do what they do for the money, they do far more than anyone gives the credit for. Teacher are such a vital part to our journey thought this life. In Chelsea Catlett blog, blog.ted the big idea: 3 reasons to be kind to educators her number 2 reason to be kind to educators is “2. Educators don’t just teach, they manage a flurry of feelings.” Teacher don’t simply teach, there isn’t anything simple about the art of teaching. They handle a variety of emotional task as well. They are mentors, counselors, parent figures, friends and I’m sure many more influences that I haven’t mentioned. In today’s world mental health has been an increasing issue. I believe teachers play a big positive role in that. They not only teach academic skills but they have somehow come off the radar for what they do for us mentally. From the very start of our education such, as preschool and kindergarten, teachers have taught us what emotions are and how to handle them. It doesn’t stop at just those grade levels. Emotional education continues to be focus on even up until collage. Mental health is such a big deal, why are teachers not getting the credit there deserve?
I think that people/parents/kids/everyone just get caught up in the academic part of education and miss everything else that educators do for us. It is easy to say that a teacher isn’t doing his or her job because in 1stgrade my child may not be able to read 100 words (accounting to school district standards) but to say my child can handle a rough day using age appropriate coping skills means nothing in the education world. As a parent, I know how everyone can easily miss the mental part of education and only focus on the academic but I think the school district and/or school administrators that handle what goes into being a teacher should highly consider everything that a teacher does. Only then can a teacher be truly appreciated for everything that they do.
